Prepare either:


1) a brief song (please bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided), OR

2) a brief monologue, OR

3) 16 bars of a song and a brief monologue.

NIGHT BLOOMS (PLAY)

Producer: Virginia Repertory Theatre

Venue: The November Theatre

First Rehearsal: September 3, 2012

Runs: September 26, 2012 – October 21, 2012

Character Breakdown:

Ruth Stafford Hill (white, mid thirties). Daughter of Buzz and Lucille Stafford, married

to the town pediatrician, Lendley Hill.

Lucy Stafford Hill (white, age 12-14). Daughter to Ruth and Lendley. An only child.

Slightly precocious; a forward thinker.

Lucille Stafford (white, mid sixties). The matriarch of the Stafford family. Mother to

Clayton and Ruth. Old South nobility.

Clayton Busbee Stafford Jr, (Buzz Stafford), aka Grandaddy (white, late sixties). A

self-made man, dying of lung cancer. Married to Lucille, father to Clayton and Ruth.

Geneva Willis (black, mid-thirties) The Stafford’s longtime housekeeper and primary

nurse to Buzz. Widowed mother of two children, Raynelle and Cleo.

Raynelle Willis (black, age 11-12) Geneva’s daughter. Mindful.

Clayton Busbee Stafford III (white, early thirties). Son of Buzz and Lucille, younger

brother to Ruth. A Unitarian Universalist Minister in Baltimore. A renegade preacher,

somewhat distanced from his family.

ROGER DEBRIS: Male. Over-the-top, cross-dressing director.

CARMEN GHIA: Male. Roger’s flamboyant assistant.

ULLA: Female. Secretary and wannabe actress with a comic Swedish accent. Must be able to belt.

ENSEMBLE: Strong singers and dancers of all types.

MARK ROTHKO: Male, 50s. An abstract expressionist painter, arrogant and self-obsessed.

KEN: Male, 20s. His young assistant.

Character Breakdown:

CELIE: Female. Insecure yet spirited, appears meek and timid but has a tough interior, has been told she is ugly and thinks so. Treated poorly for many years, she finds love and confidence to become an independent thinker.

MISTER: Male. An outwardly attractive, dominant male presence. Disrespectful, demanding, and abusive.

OL’ MISTER: Male. Mister's stubborn father. Outwardly demeaning, disrespectful, and constantly puts down his son.

SHUG AVERY: Female. A well-known singer, very charismatic. A sexy, confident, and powerful female presence, irresistible to all.

SOFIA: Female. Powerful, humorous, independent warrior woman. Physically larger with a presence to match. Comfortable and confident in her own skin, will not accept mistreatment.

HARPO: Male. Mister’s vulnerable, good-natured son, torn between what he learned from his father and what he is learning from Sofia, learns to treat women well and becomes successful with his business.

NETTIE: Female. An adventuresome, spunky, and educated young woman. Has a strong, unbreakable bond with her older sister, Celie.

SQUEAK: Female. Spunky, fun, sassy, opinionated, and not easily intimidated.
CHURCH LADIES (DARLENE, DORIS, JARENE): Big, strong personalities and presences. Character women who are the busybodies of the town, they see everything and comment on everything.

ENSEMBLE: Strong singers and dancers.
