BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS: Money Talks is a fast-paced, madcap romp which requires all 4 performers to remain onstage for most the show’s 90-minute run time. Performers must have versatility and dexterity in their voice and body, particularly for the tracks outside of BEN FRANKLIN, which require a parade of quick changes into new characters.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

[BEN FRANKLIN] Male, 50s-70s. Bari-tenor. The classic image of the founding father we know from the $100 bill brought to life. As he is passed from person to person, Ben Franklin serves as the narrator, talking directly with the audience and commenting on the often unsettling state of America today. Witty, sometimes sarcastic, but ultimately lovable, Ben Franklin is an intellectual with a heart. Strong character actor required.

[WOMAN] Female, 20s-30s. Belt/high mix. Any ethnicity. Versatile character actress who plays the following roles throughout the show:

  • ALEXANDER HAMILTON - The founding father, straight off the $10 bill.
  • JENNY - An incredible dancer working at a strip club to make ends meet and support her child.
  • BROOKE FAIRBANKS - A blonde trophy wife who plays poker using her unusually brilliant math skills to cure her boredom when her husband is away on business.
  • JUANITA CENTAVO - A young Mexican American girl who dreams of stardom as a pop singer, and won’t let anything stand in her way.
  • HOOKER - Classic street walker.
  • GUN LOBBYIST - Will stop at nothing to protect the 2nd Amendment.
  • LAWYER - Fair woman of law that will do her job, no matter her opinion on the case.
  • ARIETTA HARDCHECK - Adoption agency clerk who puts her religious beliefs before her work responsibilities.
  • MISS PENNYWORTH - Intelligent secretary who looks to Ben Franklin’s quotes for lessons and inspiration.
  • STERLING GRANDERSON - High profile art buyer who married for over social status instead of love.

[MAN 1] Male, 20s-30s. Tenor. A leading man type with strong character skills. Throughout the show, he plays the following:

  • ABE LINCOLN - The founding father straight off the $5 bill.
  • TOM GRANDERSON - A young hedge fund guy doing all the “right things” that must lose everything before he learns that he never had anything of worth in the beginning.
  • ERNIE LACOSTE - World Series of Poker host.
  • JORGE CENTAVO - A kind, hardworking Mexican American man trying to build a better life for his children, even if they want something a bit different.
  • THIEF - Classic mugger/ thug that turns out to be outmatched by a teenage girl.
  • LUIGI - Owner of a popular Italian restaurant that amps up the campiness of an overweight Italian chef to please his customers. Sings in huge operatic tone.
  • CONGRESSMAN CHEEZLY - Young congressman easily persuaded by sexual bribes.
  • FRANK/FRANCOISE - A born and raised Brooklyn guy that realized he could make a larger profit as a flamboyant French hairstylist than he could as a typical barber.
  • EVAN PRYCE - A slightly impatient gay man that plans to be a stay-at-home father when he and his partner Jeff adopt a child.
  • LOUELLA WADSWORTHY - The classic preacher’s wife responsible for taking the tithes at their daily services.
  • TELLER - A guy working in customer service and hating every moment of it, even though he puts on a happy face to get it done.

[MAN 2] Male, 20s-40s. Bari-tenor. Slightly more mature than MAN 1, MAN 2 plays a lot of characters verging on middle age, though still with a believable romantic sensibility. Strong character actor. Throughout the show, he plays the following characters:

  • GEORGE WASHINGTON - The founding father straight off the $1 bill.
  • MR. SWAGMORE - A sleazy CEO with a history of sexual harassment accusations.
  • FLOYD BUCKWALLER - A dreamer from Texas with big plans for him and his girlfriend Jenny, but he never has the gumption, smarts or drive to make any of them happen.
  • JAKE - Owner of the recording studio that records Juanita’s first demo. All business at first, but gets inspired by Juanita’s incredible talent.
  • OFFICER GAINES - A crooked officer blackmailing local businesses for profit.
  • ANNNOUNCER - Classic voice of god sound.
  • CONGRESSMAN’S WIFE - An ugly woman that believes spending money is the way to fit in, as well as getting her husband’s attention.
  • JEFF PRYCE - A gay man working as an associate at a law firm. Gentler sensibility than his husband, Evan, and hoping to adopt their first child soon.
  • REVEREND WADSWORTHY - Preacher with the vigor of a televangelist.
  • LABORER - Painter confused about why it’s so hard to get ahead in the working class.
  • MOVING MAN - Out of shape mover tasked with transporting Sterling’s overweight and ugly art piece. Doesn’t have a lot of patience for it.

[MALE UNDERSTUDY] Male, 20s – 40s. Versatile character actor to cover the on-stage men.

[FEMALE UNDERSTUDY] Female, 20s – 30s. Versatile character actor to cover the on-stage woman.
