SEEKING
Equity actors for various roles in the upcoming 2017 Season Plays and Musicals.
PREPARATION
Prepare Two 2-minute monologues in contrasting styles OR one 2-minute
monologue and 16 bars of a song. If singing, bring sheet music;
accompanist will be provided.

(Male, 50-60) An aeronautical engineer. Apparently down to earth and practical but also somewhat over reliant on herbal medication. Wry sense of humor. Described as an intelligent enough fellow but one of those new-style intellectuals... an enemy of modernism... who takes pride in running it down...a nostalgia merchant.
[SERGE]
(Male, 50-60) Described as a dermatologist who has done very well for himself... and who is keen on art, Serge has just spent a small fortune on a pure white canvas. His insecurity about this purchase is reflected in acute sensitivity to the smallest change in mood of those around him. A well-defined neurotic.
[YVAN]
(Male, 45's-early 50's) An amiable, 'tolerant friend and salesman who has spent many years in therapy. Self-described as tense at the moment, perhaps because his fiance has just forced him into a new job with her uncle in the stationery business, a trade about in which he knows nothing. Couple these facts with an impending marriage, for a man in his forties and you can understand why he is 'tense.

[STAFF SERGEANT FROGGY LESUER]
(Male, Early 30’s- Late 40’s) A British army sergeant and demolition expert on loan to a local U.S. Army base. He is more or less a contemporary of Charlie’s. He may in fact be Charlie’s only friend. He is open, hearty, cheerful and well traveled. A natural storyteller and all around good fellow. You would love to have a beer with him. He speaks with a working class English accent.
[CHARLIE BAKER]
(Male, early 30’s-Late 40’s) An Englishman. Sweet, intelligent, gentle, and pathologically shy. The idea of contact with strangers throws him into a debilitating panic. He is a proofreader for a science fiction magazine. He should be of ordinary height and build, with an innocent face. Capable of expert physical comedy and should have exceptional vocal versatility (he has to do a number of accents and voices). His natural accent is middle-class English, but he adopts an accent that can be vaguely middle to eastern European, plus various other “creepy ogre-alien” voices. Special note: Charlie is not an actor or any type of performer. Indeed he is just the opposite. He is very intelligent and is forced to adopt a different persona out of fear and desperation. And does so on the spot. He is always improvising a step ahead of disaster. At no point can the actor playing him even hint to the audience that Charlie knows how clever or adorable he is as doing so would make Charlie a total fraud and collapse the play.
[BETTY MEEKS]
(Female, Mid 50’s-Mid 70’s) Owns Betty Meeks’ Fishing Lodge Resort in Tilghman County, Georgia, where the play is set. She is am amiable, folksy widow with a good bit of vinegar left in her spirit. She has the accent of rural Georgia but is in no way a hillbilly. Elderly and overburdened as she is, she is still fairly hearty physically.
[REV. DAVID MARSHAL LEE]
(Male, Late 20’s-Early 40’s) A friendly, open faced young man. David, we see, is neither the stereotypically pallid, remote young divinity student, nor the hearty, backslapping evangelist. He seems rather to be a regular fella. Humorous, and open, and, it would appear, a good young man to have on our side. He speaks with an educated Georgia accent. Think Jimmy Carter or a young Pat Boone.
[CATHERINE SIMMS]
(Female, Late 20’s-Mid 30’s)Must read early 20’s. Ellard’s older sister. She is a very attractive young woman. Their father was a wealthy businessman, but is now deceased, leaving Catherine as a very wealthy young woman. She is engaged to Reverend David. She is a fading “deb” and a graduate of the University of Georgia. Smart and sharp-tongued when we first meet her. She is actually a bit of a shrew, angry impatient, and seemingly a bit spoiled. She is the direct opposite of her brother. We soon discover what that anger and spoiled behavior is concealing. She emerges as a loving and dedicated woman. She speaks with an educated Georgia accent. Think Rosalyn Carter.
[OWEN MUSSER]
(Male 30’s-Mid 50’s) A vulgar, smarmy redneck friend of David’s. Moody mercurial and dangerous. As the playwright says, “Psychologists tell us to beware of a man with two tattoos. One he may have gotten on a drunk dare, but two means he went back” Owen is a two-tattoo man. He is not stupid, but like all racists he is profoundly ignorant. He speaks with a rural Georgia accent.
[ELLARD SIMMS]
(Male, Early to Mid 20’s) Must read in his late teens. He is Catherine’s younger brother. The playwright describes him as “a lumpy overgrown backward youth.” This is apt, but ideally he should be of average height at best. Backward does not mean mentally damaged. He is actually quite bright and gentle, but is emotionally stunted. He has been overlooked, ignored and untended, without ever getting a chance to grow and prosper as a person. He is naturally quiet and shy. He has a rural Georgia accent and speaks cautiously for fear of making a blunder, Special note: As with Charlie, the actor playing Ellard must never allow the audience to suspect that Ellard knows how funny and adorable he is, That road leads to disaster. Avoid it.

Male. Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens. Male, Tenor, Eb3-Bb4. Insecure, a little bit of a bully, can only breathe from one nostril and has severe allergies. A finalist in last year’s Bee, he was disqualified for a health-related incident, an event he is all too familiar with.
[OLIVE OSTROVSKY]
Female. Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens, Soprano, B3-F#5. Little Girl Lost, result of inattentive parenting. Sweet, and naïve. Her mom’s in an ashram in India. Her dad promises that, this time, he’ll try to make it. Her best friend is the dictionary.
[LEAF CONEYBEAR]
Male, Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens, Bari-Tenor A2-G4. Red headed actor preferred, but not necessary. Marches to his own drummer and is a bit spacey. As just the second runner-up in his district’s Bee, he really shouldn’t be here. He makes his own clothes.
[MARCY PARK]
Female. Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens, Mezzo-Soprano B3-E5. Chronic over-achiever. Excels at anything she attempts, but finds no joy in the success. She made it all the way to ninth place in Nationals last year. She sleeps three hours a night.
[LOGGAINE SCHWARTZANGRUBENIERRE]
Female. Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens, Soprano C4-D5. A very young politico, vocal, opinionated, but craving acceptance. Must be able to do a convincing lisp. The youngest of the competitors, her stage fathers would make Mama Rose blush.
[CHIP TOLENTINO]
Male. Actor 18+ to play younger. Character is early teens, High Tenor C3-B4. Boy Scout, the “stud” of the bee. Outward confidence masks inward fears. The reigning spelling bee champion is beginning to learn the ups and downs of puberty.
[MITCH MAHONEY]
Male, Late 20’s Late 30’s, Tenor, E3-A4, African American. Confident, sexy, dangerous, but with a good heart. Sings R&B/Gospel attitude songs. Fulfilling his community service, this former felon is now the Bees Comfort Counselor, handing out juice boxes and a dose of reality to the losers.
[VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH]
Male, 30’s-40’s. Non-singing role. Must have deadpan comedic timing. The “incident” of five years ago is almost forgotten. This Lake Heningway-Dos Passos Junior High Vice Principal is now in a better place thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis.
[RONA LISA PERETTI]
Female, Early 30’s-Mid 40’s, Soprano C#4-Ab5. Strong singer. Consummate professional. She is the big “bee.” This former Spelling Bee champ is not only the county’s top realtor, she alsi runs a highly lucrative E-Bay business selling sensible pumps at sensible prices.

(Female, Late Teens-Early 20’s, Ab-D) The older version of Baby June. Pretty, talented, and frustrated with Mom’s domination. Cartwheel, splits and twirling ability helpful.
