PREPARATION

Please prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song in the style of Jason Robert Brown, showing range. Please bring sheet music for the piano accompanist provided. Please bring a headshot and resume stapled together.

Opens the musical with “The Old Red Hills of Home.” Tenor, Low D—High F/High A in falsetto. Possible understudy for principal role of FRANKIE EPPS (Mary Phagan’s devoted teenage friend. Charming, simple, playful, and flirtatious. Tenor, Low Bb—High Ab). ENSEMBLE

[NEWT LEE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 30s–40s, Black. Night watchman at the National Pencil Factory who finds Mary Phagan’s body. Bass, Low Bb—C. Possible understudy for ensemble role of RILEY (Governor Slaton’s chauffeur. Tenor or Baritone). ENSEMBLE

[RILEY] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 30s–40s, Black. Governor Slaton’s chauffeur. Tenor or Baritone. Possible understudy for principal role of JIM CONLEY (Janitor who works for Leo Frank at the National Pencil Factory. Secretly, he is a convict on the run. Pompous showman with a strong build. [LUTHER ROSSER/MR. PEAVY] Characters are male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 50s–60s, Caucasian. LUTHER ROTHER is Leo Frank’s lawyer. MR. PEAVY guards Leo Frank’s cell in Milledgeville. Possible understudy for principal roles of OLD SOLDIER/JUDGE ROAN (OLD SOLDIER: The old man who was formerly the young confederate soldier. JUDGE ROAN: Serves as the Judge in the Leo Frank case. Motivated by bigotry and racism, he is dangerously committed to the ideals of the Confederacy. Bari-Tenor, Low C—High G). ENSEMBLE

[MR. TURNER & OTHERS] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 30s, Caucasian. Guard of Leo Frank’s cell in Fulton. Possible understudy for principal role of LEO FRANK (Northern Jewish man who runs the National Pencil Factory and is falsely accused of the rape and murder of Mary Phagan. He is neurotic and a serial pessimist. Though married to Lucille, he is physically and emotionally displaced. Bari-Tenor, Low G—High G) and HUGH DORSEY (Atlanta’s District Attorney. He is a devout Christian, who is brute and manipulative at times. Hungry for political success and recognition. Baritone/Bass). ENSEMBLE

[DETECTIVE STARNES & OTHERS] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s–50s, Caucasian. A police officer assigned to the Leo Frank case. Possible understudy for principal roles of GOVERNOR SLATON (As the Governor of Georgia, he is highly concerned with public perception. Flirtatious and fun at times. Strives to maintain his values. Bari-Tenor, Low C—High G) and OLD SOLDIER/JUDGE ROAN (OLD SOLDIER: The old man who was formerly the young confederate soldier. JUDGE ROAN: Serves as the Judge in the Leo Frank case. Possible understudy for principal roles of BRITT CRAIG (Down-on-his-luck newspaperman whose career is revived by the Leo Frank trial. Tenor, Low D—High A) and TOM WATSON (Conservative politician and publisher who helps to spur on the witch-hunt for Leo Frank. Baritone/Bass), and ensemble role of YOUNG SOLDIER & OTHERS (Confederate soldier. Opens the musical with “The Old Red Hills of Home.” Tenor, Low D—High F/High A in falsetto). ENSEMBLE

[NURSE & OTHERS] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s–30s, Caucasian. Possible understudy for principal role of LUCILLE FRANK (Jewish woman from Georgia who is married to Leo Frank. Gentle and mousy, but resourceful and resilient. Despite her husband’s feelings, she is a true Southerner through and through but can see through the deception. Mezzo, Low A—D). ENSEMBLE
