NPC 4- EXPOSURE
by Steve DiUbaldo
Dates July 9- July 15

*in casting, especially Eli, Herman, Jackie, and Kenny, basketball ability is vital to the authenticity of the piece. In terms of language, it's modern and urban but it is also southern (South Carolina) at its core.

ELI GAMBLE
17, Male, African-American - A 6'4 kid who just grew seven inches. Must be able to play basketball believably onstage. Born and bred in Columbia, South Carolina. Eli is an impressionable kid who believes he's ready to be treated like a man.

KENNY BETHEL
38, Male, African-American - old school Columbia, South Carolina. Still uses a flip phone, has a baby at home, a good marriage, and a small business. Money is tight. Kenny believes hard work and character are the keys to success. He is a straight shooter, but has a great sense of humor that he isn't able to use as he maintains authority with the kids - when he cracks a joke, it's disarming and funny.

DEION MEANS
29, Male, African-American - teenage boys think Deion is cool. His social media is on point and he wears the freshest kicks and clothes. He was never a great player, but he sees AAU basketball as an opportunity to quit his job as a car salesman and make big money. Knows how to relate to the teens.

HERMAN
18, Male, non-white - Eli's sidekick. Simultaneous support system and hater. Herman is always clowning, breaking tension when things get real. He loves Eli and looks up to Kenny.

JACKIE “MOLEY” ADAMOLI
17, Male, white - a kid from the suburbs who can really play basketball. He's been playing with kids from the city his whole childhood, and has learned how to fit in, but he can never truly fit in. He's chill, but very driven to play college basketball - it's his dream.

*The same actor plays both Coach Wicks and Coach Lundy*

COACH WICKS
30’s-40’s, Male, any ethnicity - A southern boy through-and-through. He's a local guy, LOVES the game, and is in coaching for all the right reasons. At times, he's been a bit naive about the business of basketball. Eli is his favorite prospect and he has love for the kid. When Eli grows, he becomes desperate to prove that U-Palm is still the place for Eli.

COACH LUNDY
30’s-40’s, Male, any ethnicity - A shark looking to land a big recruit. Lundy is on the fast track to become a head coach. Landing a late-bloomer like Eli could make him look like a genius. He works for Gallant University, a national powerhouse - they are very much in the business of illegal recruiting and cheating the system because the pressure to win is palpable each and every day.

____________

NPC 7- BLACK SUPER HERO MAGIC MAMA
by Inda Craig Galvan
Dates July 21- July 27

SABRINA JACKSON aka MAASAI ANGEL:
Female, 40, Black. Her son is the world that she orbits. Widowed 10 years ago but never had the luxury to grieve – who has that kind of time? What some folks might call “helicopter parenting,” Sabrina would call common sense and keeping her kid safe. Expert at code-switching. She used to draw; now she works for the phone company. MAASAI ANGEL: a warrior-like hero. Singular in focus. Relies on wits, brawn, and a big-ass blade to get it done. Really likes fighting.

TRAMARION JACKSON:
Male, 14, Black. Sabrina’s son. Genuinely likes school, member of the academic decathlon team. He’d brag about the fact that he’s the best – because he is – but he knows his mom might overhear and knock him down a peg or two. His plan for the future includes both being a doctor and creating a comic book empire with his best friend Flat Joe.

CONNIE WRIGHT aka KITTY KINCAIDE:
Female, 35, Asian. Connie’s real-world national news anchor position was hard-won and she enjoys the challenges. She can exploit the hell out of a story, but it’s wearing on her. KITTY KINCAIDE – a typical comic-book victim. She gains agency after witnessing Maasai Angel at work.

TOM BLACKMAN aka RANDY ROUGHGUY:
Male, 40, Black. A field reporter. He’s proud of the fact that you’d never guess he grew up on the Southside of Chicago. Pretentious. Thinks a lot about his next meal. RANDY ROUGHGUY – comic-book man-handler.

LENA EVERS:
Female, 32, Black. Community-minded, professional, stylish. Runs an Afro-centric art gallery in Hyde Park. Sabrina's sister and Tramarion's aunt. Has always benefitted from/relied on being the younger sister.

COACH COREY BRACKETT aka THE TEACHER:
Male, 40, Black. Part-time “acadeca” coach; full-time history teacher. Inspires “his kids” to make us all look good. Protective, fatherly, well-intentioned and typically successful at leading. Single and ready to settle down. THE TEACHER – comic book villain a little higher in the food chain. Full of puns. Tends to abduct younger victims. Weapon of choice is the shaolin meteor hammer.

FLAT JOE/JOSEPH A. HUGHES aka KID DANGER:
Male, 14, Black. At 14, he hardly even notices anymore when women clutch their purses in elevators. An artist skilled beyond his years and circumstances. Best part of his day is being insulted by Tramarion’s mom... in a nice, safe home. He shares T’s dream of creating their own comic book. Hopes he lives that long. Knows he likely won’t. KID DANGER – models his costume after Superman, though he has no inherent powers. He digs that people assume he’s the villain.

DAVE LESTER aka DEATH TAP:
Male, 40, White. A Chicago cop with a clean record. Married, a kid on the way. Owns a bungalow-style home in Brighton Park. Knows everyone by name at his two regular bars. One of those bars is in a bowling alley. Soooo over the douchebag Cub fans. Sincerely wants to protect and serve. DEATH TAP – comic-book villain. Gunslinger. Haughty.
