Segerstrom Center to Host New Summer Film Camp for Students, 8/11-15

Segerstrom Center to Host New Summer Film Camp for Students, 8/11-15

The words "and .... ACTION!" will echo across the Center's campus as it becomes a film studio and back lot for a new generation of filmmakers participating in the Center's first Segerstrom Center Film Camp this summer, August 11 - 15.

Students will be guided by industry professionals and immerse themselves in the processes of creative writing, directing, acting, cinematography, sound recording, art and set design, costuming, make-up and editing.

Segerstrom Center President Terrence W. Dwyer said, "The Center's Film Camp is an exciting expansion of our education programs. In addition to exploring their interest in the art and craft of filmmaking, they will hone many other important skills. These include creative thinking, goal setting, team work and time management." Dwyer added, "Every Center education program, including our Film Camp, is designed to provide an array of engaging and entertaining arts opportunities as well as life-enriching lessons and skill sets that can be applied to wide variety of other subjects and life experiences."

The Center will be joining forces with Ted Schilowitz, who has the unique title of "Futurist" for FOX Studios and was co-founder of RED Digital Cinema, a leading supplier of digital cameras to the worldwide motion picture industry. Schilowitz's role at FOX is all about the future of motion picture entertainment and the technology that is driving the movies for the next generation. As he said, "What better place to experiment with the future than with kids, who have the most open minds of anyone, at a summer movie camp?" Students will be guided by industry professionals in small teams and use the same state-of-the- art equipment as employed to create today's top blockbuster films, television shows, commercials and music videos. The Camp will culminate in a special screening of the students' projects for family, friends and industry professionals.

Schilowitz added, "The Center's physical aesthetic and its innate environment already support and nurture the arts exceptionally well, making it a perfect environment for this program. In many ways, cinema is an extension of the performing arts, and I look forward to taking the art of movie making further and enriching the process of filmmaking for kids with a passion for visual arts. Fun doesn't even begin to describe how fantastic it is when you put real movie making tools into the hands of children without limitations, letting them create and then see their results on a big movie screen. It's a total joy to see kids embrace technology and storytelling in new, compelling ways that we as adults may not have even thought about."

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is unique as both an acclaimed arts institution and as a multi- disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all of its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs.

Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center traces its roots back to the late 1960s when a dedicated group of community leaders decided Orange County should have its own world-class performing arts venue.

As Orange County's largest non-profit arts organization, Segerstrom Center for the Arts owns and operates the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall and intimate 250-seat Founders Hall, which opened in 1986, and the 2,000-seat Rene?e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, which opened in 2006 and also houses the 500-seat Samueli Theater, the Lawrence and Kristina Dodge Education Center's studio performance space and Boeing Education Lab. A spacious arts plaza anchors Segerstrom Center for Arts and is home to numerous free performances throughout the year as part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' ongoing Free for All series.

The Center presents a broad range of programming each season for audiences of all ages from throughout Orange County and beyond, including international ballet and dance, national tours of top Broadway shows, intimate performances of jazz and cabaret, contemporary artists, classical music performed by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles, family-friendly programming, free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. It offers many education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. These programs reach hundreds of thousands of students of all ages with vital arts-in-education programs, enhancing their studies and enriching their lives well into the future.

In addition to the presenting and producing institution Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the 14-acre campus also embraces the facilities of two independent acclaimed organizations: Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region's major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
