The Hartt School welcomes world renowned artists who are sharing their talents with Hartt students and the community. 

Hartt students along with opera students from The Yale School of Music and University of Connecticut, will participate in a master class with mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne on Sunday, March 7 at 3:00 PM in the Hoffman Auditorium at St. Joseph College, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford. This class is open to the public for observation. Tickets for a reception with Horne are $50. Tickets for the class are: $37.50 in advance, $40 at door, $18 for students with I.D. without the reception. Please call 860-231-5555 for more information. Wednesday, March 10, from 5:30 PM- 7:30 PM, Carol Rodland from Eastman School of Music presents a Viola Master class in Room 201 of the Fuller Music Center. Rodland made her solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of seventeen. She subsequently won first prizes at the Washington International Competition, the Artists' International Auditions, and the Juilliard Concerto Competition, as well as the Universal Editions Prize at the Lionel Tertis InternationAl Viola Competition. Her recently released solo album on the Crystal Records label has received excellent reviews in the press, and Fanfare Magazine praises her for her "tone [which] is larger than life, sweetly in tune, and infinitely variegated" and for her "delicious" playing. Ms. Rodland holds degrees from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Karen Tuttle, and from the Musikhochschule Freiburg, where as a Fulbright Scholar she studied with Kim Kashkashian. She has held professorships at New England Conservatory, where she was recognized in 2005 with the Krasner Award for Excellence in Teaching, at the Musikhochschule "Hanns Eisler" Berlin, at Arizona State University, and as guest faculty at the Juilliard School. Friday, March 26, at 1:30-3:30 PM, in Wilde Auditorium, the Vocal Studies Division is pleased to announce renowned French-Canadian bass-baritone Claude Corbeil. Corbeil performed on the operatic and concert stages of the world for over 39 years. With a master's degree from the Montreal Conservatory of Music, he made his operatic debut at the age of 17 in the role of Chichibio in Mozart's L'Oca del Cairo. This launched a career in which he became best known for his portrayals of opera's favorite comedic characters, among them Leporello, Basilio, Figaro, Sulpice, Don Alfonso, Dulcamara, Don Magnifico, Don Pasquale, Gianni Schicchi, and Falstaff. In addition to the comedic figures in his more than 80 roles, he also sang Mephistopheles, the four villains in Tales of Hoffman , Don Giovanni, Colline, Johanahaan, Frere Laurent, Raimondo, to name only a few.

Thursday, April 1, at 4:15 PM, Guest Artist Garth Stevenson will present a concert and demonstration on the double bass and live electronics. Stevenson has been presenting solo concerts for double bass with electronics since his 2005 debut in Warsaw. The music has evolved from mostly improvised pieces to longer, composed works that are difficult to categorize in a musical style; some have compared it to modern classical, new, experimental, film, ambient, or music inspired by nature.

Saturday, April 3, at 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM, a Violin Masterclass with Sibbi Bernhardsson will be held in Berkman RecitAl Hall. As a member of The Pacifica Quartet, Violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson performs more than 90 concerts annually around the world. He has performed in some of the most prestigious concert venues including The Wigmore Hall, Consertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Edinburgh Festival, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, Music@Menlo, Dai Seimei Hall in Tokyo, and others. He has performed with Yo Yo Ma, Menahem Pressler, The Emerson String Quartet, Wu Han, and members of the Guarneri and Cleveland Quartets. His awards include a 2009 Grammy Award for best performance in Chamber music, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, The Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Icelandic Lindar Award. He was a member of the Lincoln Center Chamber Society II program. He has recorded for the Naxos Label, Cedille Records, and the Icelandic labe Skref. He also has appeared as soloist with The Iceland Symphony Orchestra, The Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, and City Music of Cleveland. His TV appearances include Saturday Night Live, The Jay Leno Show, and the MTV Music Awards with Rock Artist Bjork. Bernhardsson is on the Faculty at University of Illinois, Artist-in-Residence at University of Chicago, and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA.

Monday, April 19 from 2:30-5:00 PM, a Masterclass in Double Bass with Tim Cobb will be held in Room 163 of the Fuller Music Center. Tim Cobb is Principal Bass for the Metropolitan Opera and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestras, and a former member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is on the faculty of the Sarasota Music Festival, and has participated in numerous chamber music festivals worldwide. A former participant in the Marlboro Music Festival, he has recorded on several CDs with the Harmonie Ensemble, including L'histoire du soldat (2003 Grammy nominee) and all Met recordings since 1985. Cobb serves on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and Conservatory of Music, Purchase College.

Tuesday, April 20 at 11:00 AM, a Viola Masterclass with Gilad Karni will be held in Berkman RecitAl Hall.
Gilad Karni, renowned soloist and PrincipAl Viola in the Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich, will present a one hour viola masterclass at Hartt courtesy of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra Education Program. Mr. Karni will perform April 22-25 as soloist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
