Carousel barker Billy Bigelow's romance with millworker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. When he learns she is carrying his child, he attempts a robbery to provide for them both. After it goes awry and Billy dies, he is given a chance in the hereafter by a kindly Starkeeper to return to earth to set things right.
