Tony-winning scene designer Donyale Werle will present a session on sustainable set design and award the first Broadway Green Alliance College Captains Prize at USITT 2015 in Cincinnati March 20.

The Brooklyn-based designer is as famous for her leadership in the BGA and her use of recyclable and salvaged materials in her sets as she is for her award-winning work on such Broadway hits as Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Peter and the Starcatcher.

Werle and BGA co-chair Charlie Duell will help lead a Greener Model-Building Workshop from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Duke Energy Convention Center, one of over 275 sessions taking place during USITT's 2015 Annual Conference & State Expo March 18-21. Registration is still open here.

The BGA workshop promotes greener design practices, starting with model building using alternative materials such as cardboard, plastic packaging, cereal boxes, manila folders, and other household items. Participants will work in teams to build a theatre, walls, furniture, dressing, and unique sculptural elements.

After the workshop, Werle and Duell will announce the winner of the BGA's first College Green Captain Prize, an award recognizing outstanding achievement in greening campus productions. The BGA, an industry-wide initiative that works for sustainable practices in the theatre community, will be in Booth 638 at Stage Expo.

USITT 2015 also features a session on green costume design on Wed., March 18. Green Clothing Outside Oz: Environmentally Conscious Costuming will be held 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. March 18 in Duke Ballroom D. Jessica Pribble, co-author of A Practical Guide to Green(er) Theatre, will cover the design approach, wardrobe and laundry process, natural dye work, and more, followed by a group discussion.

USITT, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, is the national non-profit serving the backstage community. It's Conference & Stage Expo attracts 5,000 people and over 280 exhibitors for four days of networking, workshops, awards, and product resourcing. For more information, visit www.usittshow.org.
