Why do fools fall in love? Maybe because Puck, court jester to the King of the Fairies, has sprinkled a magic potion on their eyes, causing them to fall in love with the first person they see. When that happens, even the Queen of the Fairies can fall for a blustering workman with the head of a jackass. In perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare’s comedies, four mixed-up young lovers spend a night in the forest while a band of “rude mechanicals” rehearses a tragedy to be performed at the marriage of Duke Theseus and the Amazon Queen Hippolyta. In the end, the royal marriage becomes a group wedding, the tragic play provokes gales of laughter, and as Puck tells us, “Jack shall have Jill; / Nought shall go ill; / The man shall have his mare again, and all shall be well.”
