Danielle Pinnock's THE BODY IMAGE PROJECT Opens 4/18 at Gorilla Tango
Award-winning actor and playwright Danielle Pinnock will perform her one-woman show "The Body Image Project" this April at Gorilla Tango Bucktown. Directed by "El Stories" creator Thomas Murray, performances of "The Body Image Project" run Friday and Saturday April 18 and 19, Thursday and Friday April 24 and 25, 2014 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 4:30 pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at gorillatango.com/bucktown or by calling 773-598-4549.
Based on word-for-word interviews that plus-size actor Danielle Pinnock conducted in the United States and UK, "The Body Image Project" explores definitions of beauty and the media's perception of body image through poignant and hilarious real life stories. People portrayed by Pinnock include renowned transgendered surgeon Dr. Marci Bowers, a Miss California pageant contestant, and Chicago PD star LaRoyce Hawkins. Pinnock morphs into these real-life characters with ease and challenges perceptions of what it means to be beautiful.
"After two years of interviewing and writing this play I am so excited to get it in front of an audience," says creator and performer Pinnock. "This is relevant, focused theater that addresses the pervasive obsession with our bodies that permeates our culture."
Portions of "The Body Image Project" have previously been performed Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse. "The Body Image Project" is the winner of the Best Actress award at the NYC Strawberry Theatre Festival competition where it also garnered Best Director and Best Play nominations.
