Chicago Children's Theatre presents Writers Theatre's The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights, today, January 24-February 6, 2015 as part of its new Later Stages series for kids ages 8 and up.

Written by Yolanda Androzzo and starring Caren Blackmore, The MLK Project is a one-woman show that follows a Chicago student's personal transformation through studying the Civil Rights Movement. Alaya uses her fists as an outlet for anger. But after interviewing local heroes of the Movement she discovers she can put "anger into action" and that her power is in her voice and her hip hop, not violence.

By weaving real interviews, poetry, hip hop, history and multi-media projections, The MLK Project tells stories of both celebrated and unsung Chicago-based Civil Rights Activists. Featured are Reverend Samuel "Billy" Kyles, who was present on the evening Dr. King was killed; poet and artist Dr. Margaret Taylor Goss Burroughs, founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History; Reverend Jesse Jackson, longtime fighter for social justice; and Puerto Rican poet and activist David Hernandez.

The MLK Project opens Saturday, January 24, 2105 at 6 p.m. There is also an evening performance for family audiences on Saturday, January 31 at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $15. Visit chicagochildrenstheatre.org or call (872) 222-9555 to purchase tickets.

Weekday matinees continue through February 6, Tuesday through Friday at 10 am and noon. These performances are ideal for school groups, home schoolers, tourists, and groups celebrating Black History Month. Show times vary by day.
