The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) today announced that Emmy Award winning journalist Jose Diaz-Balart, news anchor for "Noticiero Telemundo" and host of "Enfoque con Jose Diaz-Balart," will serve as celebrity host at its 36th Annual Awards Gala on October 2, 2013 in Washington, D.C. The event is the largest gathering of Latino leaders in the country and is part of CHCI's Hispanic Heritage Month events, including its 2013 Public Policy Conference and Reyes of Comedy. Diaz-Balart is celebrity hosting thanks to long time CHCI partner and Telemundo parent company, Comcast NBCUniversal.

Diaz-Balart is one of the most respected and experienced voices in U.S. Hispanic journalism. He is news anchor of "Noticiero Telemundo" and the host of "Enfoque con Jose Diaz-Balart," the only Spanish-language current-affairs program focused on topics of interest to the Hispanic community produced from Washington D.C. He is the first and only U.S. journalist to have anchored both English and Spanish-language newscasts on two national networks for more than one week. His work has been recognized with numerous accolades including two Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award and an Alfred I DuPont-Columbia University Award. More recently, Diaz-Balart was honored by two leading television industry publications, Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News, as the 2012 recipient of their time-honored award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television.

CHCI's 36th Annual Awards Gala will convene the nation's largest and most prestigious gathering of Hispanic nonpartisan, public, and private sector leaders at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The evening's festivities will include the presentation of the CHCI Medallion of Excellence awards to entertainer Salma Hayek Pinault and Dr. Juan Andrade, President of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. The CHCI Chair's Award will be presented to Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, Chancellor of the University of Texas System.

CHCI's Public Policy Conference currently has confirmed 30 members of Congress to participate, including five senators and four House members who will come together to discuss comprehensive immigration reform. Other key topics that will be addressed include the economy, education, technology, and unity among minority communities.
