BAFTA award-winning THE HOLLOW CROWN: THE WAR OF THE ROSES returns to PBS/THIRTEEN's GREAT PERFORMANCES for three consecutive Sundays beginning December 11th through December 25th.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Bonneville, Dame Judi Dench, Tom Sturridge, Sophie Okonedo and Keeley Hawes, and with direction by Dominic Cooke, The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses is a lavish three-part television event of Shakespeare's "Henry VI" (Part 1), "Henry VI" (Part 2) and "Richard III."

SYNOPSES:

Henry VI - Part 1

Premieres: December 11, 2016

After the death of Henry V the realm is under the protection of the Duke of Gloucester until Henry VI comes of age. Hard won territories in France are lost and quarrels erupt after Queen Margaret is introduced at Court. Gloucester is murdered and the foundations are laid for the Wars of the Roses.

Henry VI - Part 2

Premieres: December 18, 2016

After victory at the Battle of St Alban's Plantaganet and the Yorkists force Henry VI and the Lancastrians to give away their right to the Crown on Henry's death. The ambitious Queen Margaret is enraged that her son should lose his inheritance. Margaret attacks and murders Plantaganet at his house. His surviving sons, Edward, George & Richard, escape. Joined by the Duke of Warwick they take up the struggle against the Queen and the House of Lancaster.

Richard III

Premieres: December 25, 2016

In his quest for the Crown Richard plans the murder of his brother George. After the death of Edward IV, Richard's path to the throne is clear, except for the Princes in the Tower.
