Wounded Warrior Project continues the commemoration of its 10-year anniversary with WOUNDED: THE BATTLE BACK HOME a documentary-style film series that brings to life the experiences of warriors with both visible and invisible wounds as they navigate their post-war lives. The project, produced in conjunction with Austin-based Flow Nonfiction, debuts the fourth installment, "Jason: Operation Advocate," tonight, February 23, as part of the "Taking the Hill" series on MSNBC.

The series turns the camera to Mike and Pam Estes, parents of wounded soldier Jason Ehrhart who served his country during the war in Iraq. While monitoring the safety of voters in 2005 during the first democratic elections in the country, Jason's Humvee took a direct hit from two anti-tank mines that sent the Army gunner flying out of the armored vehicle. One leg sustained severe injuries and was later amputated, while the other was badly mangled. Third-degree burns covered 60 percent of Jason's body and the force of the blast caused a traumatic brain injury. Like many parents of young wounded veterans, Mike and Pam Estes had no idea where to start when their son came home, and it was evident he would need long-term full-time care. For the past nine years, Mike and Pam Estes have provided Jason with 24-hour care and have fought to ensure their son is afforded the treatment he deserves.

In 2010, Mike Estes joined a group of other caregivers, organized with the Wounded Warrior Project, and successfully lobbied Congress to pass the Caregiver Act, which allows Veterans Affairs to provide payment to a veteran's caregiver, even if that person is a family member. Wounded: The Battle Back Home follows an extraordinary patient and his loving and determined parents as they advocate for new legislation for long term care of wounded veterans. The series also confronts the question of what happens to permanently dependent veterans like Jason when their aging caregivers become elderly and incapacitated themselves.
