The New York Times reports that 20th Century Fox is developing a film about the U.S. Supreme Court case that resulted in last week's same-sex marriage historical ruling.

A representative for Fox confirmed yesterday that the studio has acquired the life rights to Jim Obergefell, the main plaintiff in a lawsuit which eventually became a landmark in the movement for gay rights. Obergefell sued after Ohio refused to include him as the spouse of his longtime partner, John Arthur, on Arthur's death certificate after his death in 2013. The two had been legally married in Maryland.

Fox also obtained the life rights to Obergefell's lawyer, Al Gerhardstein, as well as the rights to a book proposal by Obergefell and journalist Debbie Cenziper.

Wyck Godfrey (The Fault in Our Stars), who will produce the film along with Marty Bowen, told The Times, "It's a transcendent love story about someone who goes to such a length for love that he ends up changing the world."
