Daniel Zovatto To Star in PENNY DREADFUL Sequel Series at Showtime

Daniel Zovatto is set to star in the lead role of Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, according to Deadline. The series is a followup to Penny Dreadful from John Logan, the original series' creator, writer and executive producer.

The sequel will have a new vision, new characters and storylines. It opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.

Zovatto will play Tiago, who is considered the story's male protagonist in the ensemble series. LAPD's first Mexican-American detective, Tiago grapples with racism, childhood trauma, and faith issues in 1938 Los Angeles.

The series' created, written and executive produced by Logan. Michael Aguilar will also executive produce, along with the original's EPs Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris, both of Neal Street Productions. Logan's Desert WOLF Productions will produce, and James Bagley will serve as co-executive producer.

Zovatto has recently starred as Ramon in the HBO drama series Here and Now. He also had episode arcs on Fear the Walking Dead and Revenge. He starred in the horror thriller Don't Breathe and had roles in Lady Bird, Newness, Laggies, and It Follows. Zovatto just wrapped Flinch and Heavy opposite Sophie Turner.
