According to The Hollywood Reporter, Channing Tatum has joined the cast of Disney's upcoming remake of SPLASH. One interesting twist - the actor will take on the mermaid role played by Daryl Hannah in the original 1984 comedy!

The site reports that Jillian Bell will portray the character originally played by Tom Hanks in the project from Imagine Entertainment's Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Tatum will also produce along with TReid Carolin and Peter Kieran with Anna Culp executive producing. Marja-Lewis Ryan will pen the script.

The 1984 original movie featured Hanks as "a man who as a young boy was saved from drowning by a mermaid (Hannah). The mermaid returns 20 years later and finds the boy she once saved, and gives him the option between his life on land or a life under the sea with her."

The film will mark a reunion between Tatum and Bell who previously worked together on 22 Jump Street. Tatum was recently seen on the big screen in Hail, Caesar! and next will be seen in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
