CBS EVENING NEWS Grows Its Audience for Fifth Consecutive Season

The CBS EVENING NEWS grew its audience for the fifth consecutive television season, the first time any network evening news broadcast posted five years of consecutive viewer gains since the advent of people meters in 1987, according to Nielsen most current ratings for the 2014-2015 television season.

The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY has added +1.25m viewers since Pelley became anchor in 2011, the largest viewer gain among the network evening news broadcasts over four seasons. The CBS broadcast is up +21% in viewers for the 2014-2015 television season, compared to the 2010-2011 television season.

For the 2014-2015 television season, most current, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY posted an increase among viewers (+2%, 7.23m from 7.10m) compared to last season. The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY added +130,000 viewers compared to last season and posted its best season delivery in viewers in nine years (since the 2005-2006 season).

For the May 2015 sweep, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY posted an increase among viewers (+2%, 6.63m from 6.50m), compared to the May 2014 sweep, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings. The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY posted its best May sweep delivery in viewers in nine years (since the May 2006 Sweep).

For the week ending May 22, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY was the only network evening news broadcast to post gains among adults 25-54 (+8%, 1.3/06 from 1.2/05) - the demographic most important to those who advertise in news - according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings.

Additionally, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY posted year-to-year gains among viewers (+15%, 6.90m from 6.01m) for the week ending May 22, adding +890,000 viewers compared to the same week last year. The CBS broadcast closed the viewer deficit with NBC by more than 1.1m viewers and with ABC by 600,000 viewers compared to last year. This week marked the closest CBS has been to NBC in viewers in almost nine years (since the week ending Sept. 29, 2006).
On last week's broadcasts, Jeff Glor reported on the Takata airbag recall; Clarissa Ward spoke with the mother of missing U.S. journalist Austin Tice; Holly Williams reported on NATO's stand against growing Russian aggression in European airspace; and Pelley looked back at David Letterman's legendary television career.
