Can an ulcer take down a work horse like Schmidt? Can Coach successfully out Jess and Ryan so he can return to being the most wanted teacher on campus? Can Nick be any lazier? All these questions were answered tonight on NEW GIRL.

When Schmidt comes down with an ulcer, Nick is quick to RUSH to his side to take care of him. Schmidt, not wanting to take off work, is powering through so he can attain the red potatoes account from his stingy boss (Guest Star, Michaela Watkins). In a serendipitous moment, Nick and Schmidt accidentally call each other out on their faults and inspire each other to do better. Schmidt realizes he has turned into a corporate drone and Nick realizes just how lazy (mentally) he has become. They decide the best thing to do is work together again. If only Nick could move past his "robots" obsession.

Winston, in all his glory, is using the power of his crystal to become a better person. Sure it was a "hazing gift" from fellow officers, but the joke's on them as it gives him confidence to live better. Jess is wearing it when she confesses her love to Ryan. And Coach is wearing it when he finally conquers his biggest fear: country line dancing.

Coach wants to out Jess and Ryan's relationship to their fellow teachers at school as he's really tired of all the female teachers ogling Ryan. After extensive research, he realizes their relationship isn't against the rules. Principal Booger (Guest Star, Curtis Armstrong) agrees however, he warns Jess that if the teachers sense the slightest tint of favoritism toward Ryan, they will pounce. And pounce they do. When they all propose their field trip ideas, even though Ryan's is miles above the rest, Jess is accused of favoritism when she picks his. To show solidarity, she reneges and picks a foliage field trip suggested by the Biology Teacher. When she realizes, it was just a cover to do yard work for the Biology teacher, the group is attacked by wasps eventually inspiring her to take a stand against the teachers. In doing so, she not only gains their respect, but also accidentally admits to Ryan in front of all of them that she loves him.

A very sweet moment, albeit quite public, for Jess and Ryan. We finally caught a glimpse of Nick's new girlfriend again. She doesn't appear very often, but she is quite amusing when she does. I do hope this is a new beginning for Nick and Schmidt as they were right, they were both caught in a rut and turned into shadows of their former selves as we all tend to do sometimes.

Lines I Love:

  • Winston - How long you two been there? Nick - When was the last time you asked me that? Winston - Last Thursday? Nick - So at least Thursday.

  • Schmidt (defending his ulcer) - I like my stomach like I like my suits; no lining!

  • Coach - Winston, look at me. And I have never been more serious about anything in my life: stop rhyming. Winston - All the timing?

  • Coach (charging a wasp nest) - Here comes me! I sting too, bees!

  • Winston - That is why God made crystals. Coach - Why'd he make that shirt?

Why is Coach so much funnier when he is in the school setting? He was on fire tonight. I just feel like seeing his character in the school environment is showing him in his element and showcasing both his strengths and vulnerability in his job. And can we talk about his sad attempt at British accent and his golden attempt at country line dancing? What we also saw was that Jess is actually quite good at her job, foliage field trip misjudgement aside. All in all? School Centric episodes are always winners. This may not have been the funniest episode of the season, but it sure did advance the plot in some major ways.
