Frank Capra's 1941 comedy-drama Meet John Doe is featured in the August lineup on Reel 13. In Meet John Doe, director Frank Capra makes powerful political statements that seem prescient today. In many of his films, Capra expressed his faith in the intrinsic goodness and decency of his fellow Americans, but in Meet John Doe, along with Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's A Wonderful Life, he reveals a populist tale about the "common man." The film was a box office hit, and was recognized with an Academy Award nomination for "Best Story."
The Pill, Trattoria and Dead Dadare the month's independent offering.

The series is pre-empted on Saturday, August 27 for special programming. Every Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m., viewers can catch a Hollywood Classic followed by an Indie, presented by Columbia University professor Richard Peña. The evening concludes with a Short film selected by viewers who vote for their favorite of three shorts at Reel13.org.
