Cellist Jay Campbell to Perform at Columbia University's Italian Academy, 5/7

Columbia University's Italian Academy for Advanced Studies presents the adventurous young cellist Jay Campbell, First Prize Winner of the 2012 Concert Artists Guild (CAG) Victor Elmaleh Competition, on its Spring 2014 concert series Wednesday evening, May 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the Teatro of the Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY. Mr. Campbell is joined by soprano Sharon Harms, pianist Stephen Gosling, and flutist Eric Lamb for an all-contemporary program of works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Jason Eckhardt, and a world premiere by American composer Jonathan Dawe. Season highlights included recitals at the Krannert Center and at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall as part of the CAG Concerts in New York series. Mr. Campbell will record his first solo CD for CAG Records as well as a chamber music disc for Tzadik. He is featured on concerts celebrating John Zorn's 60th birthday at the Lincoln Center Festival and Columbia University's Miller Theatre, and he also tours internationally during the season with Zorn and his ensemble. Festival appearances include the Moab Music Festival, Rockport Chamber Music Festival and Festival Heidelberger Fru?hling in Germany.

Praised by The New York Times for his "electrifying performances" which "conveyed every nuance," American cellist Jay Campbell combines superb tonal control, eclectic musical interests and a diverse spectrum of repertoire, which has led to collaborations with musicians ranging from Elliott Carter and Pierre Boulez to David Lang and John Zorn to members of Radiohead and Einstu?rzende Neubauten.

Recent concerto highlights include Mr. Campbell's New York Philharmonic debut performing Tan Dun's "Silk Road Encounters" from Crouching Tiger Concerto on a Young People's Concert at Avery Fisher Hall, and his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Youth Symphony at Stern Auditorium, as well as Lucerne Festival Academy, Oakland East-Bay Symphony,The Juilliard Orchestra and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Among the conductors with whom Mr. Campbell has collaborated are Pierre Boulez, Matthias Pintscher, Michael Morgan, Jeffrey Milarsky, Joshua Weilerstein. and Ryan McAdams.
