STG to Continue Trader Joe's Silent Movie Mondays with GERMAN SILENTS

Trader Joe's® Silent Movie Mondays return in March featuring the theme GERMAN SILENTS. The three part series will include masterpieces varying from science fiction to literary classic to documentary of daily life in Berlin. German-Jewish artists who fled to the U.S. and had significant influences on American Cinema made all of the films to be featured throughout the month. Following each film, CineClub will be held in The Paramount Bar. CineClub includes a community discussion around the film of the evening, silent film trivia questions and exploration of the silent film genre.

The opening film on March 2nd, METROPOLIS, is going to be a truly unique event. The film directed by Fritz Lang in 1927 Germany during the Weimar Period is regarded as a pioneer work of science fiction. We're especially excited to welcome the Degenerate Art Ensemble, who will provide the live, original orchestral score with a 17 member orchestra - creating an epic, vibe to the evening.

The second film of the series, FAUST, is the last film from 1926 that F.W. Murnau directed in Germany before moving to the United States. Many rank the colossal adaptation of Goethe'sFaust as the greatest achievement of the German silent cinema. Jane K. Brown, a former President of the Goethe Society of North America and a University of Washington professor, will introduce the film. Musical accompaniment provided by Christian Elliott on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ - Monday, March 9th.

The third and final film of the GERMAN SILENT series will be PEOPLE ON SUNDAY. Robert Siodmak directed this 1930 German noe-realism documentary, with a screenplay by Billy Wilder and cinematography by Fred Zinnemann. The film follows the daily lives of a group of young Berliner's on a summer's day before Hitler came to power. Tedde Gibson will be featured on the Mighty Wurlitzer. Julia Reinhardt, Consul for Cultural & Press Affairs from the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany will introduce the film and we will start the evening with three Weimar era songs sung by Billie Wildrick playing Sally Bowles in the May production of CABARET at the Village Theatre, accompanied by Tedde Gibson on the Mighty Wurlitzer.
