**Ember Schrag https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zXnV1-mB10&autoplay=1&app=desktop - Ember Schrag is a singer and guitarist originally from western Nebraska. Hailed as "distinctive and free of affect or artifice" by the A.V. Club, her Great-Plains-gothic style "lands somewhere between Scout Niblett and Karen Dalton, writing about land and space and hope and despair" (Nightlight). Brought up by militant Christians, she left home at 17 with a library copy of A Coney Island of the Mind and a glove box stuffed with illicit "secular music" cassettes. She progressed from gigs at Missouri's Magic Bean, Nebraskan blues bars and Kansas house parties to a series of CD-R's and DIY national tours, then two critically acclaimed albums. She has collaborated with musicians from experimental, classical, bluegrass, rock and jazz backgrounds in a shifting lineup that's come to rest on her strong New York band. She also performs occasionally in a duo with Bob Bannister (Fire in the Kitchen, Tono Bungay, P.G. Six.)
Schrag championed many underground artists with her Clawfoot House venue in Lincoln, NE, and her Iowan radio show, Dead Language Airport. This work continues in Brooklyn with the Dead Language Airport zine (with Bannister) and various concert series for Clawfoot NY. Schrag is wrapping up work on a third full length album, and while you may not have heard her music yet, New York Music Daily has declared "There is no more interesting, intelligent rock songwriter than Ember Schrag."
