Piazza was offered the role a couple weeks ago but had to figure out his work schedule for HBO's Boardwalk Empire before boarding the Warner Bros. movie.
Outside Boardwalk Empire, Piazza's other TV credits include Rescue Me and The Sopranos. He is the only actor of the four leads never to have appeared in a stage production of JERSEY BOYS.
In addition, BWW recently learned exclusively that Renee Marino, who currently plays 'Mary Delgado' in JERSEY BOYS on Broadway, will play the role in the upcoming big screen adaptation. Her other Broadway credits include Wonderland and Chaplin. Donnie Kehr will star as 'Norm Waxman', Joey Russo as 'Joe "Joey" Pesci', Jeremy Luke as 'Donnie', Christopher Walken as 'Angelo "Gyp" DeCarlo', Johnny Cannizzaro as 'Nick DeVito', and Mike Doyle as 'Bob Crewe'.
As BWW previously reported, Broadway's John Lloyd Young and Michael Lomenda are still under consideration to star in the movie musical. Erich Bergen has officially signed on to star as 'Bob Gaudio'. All three actors have previously appeared in a stage production of the musical. If cast, Young would play Frankie Valli and Lomenda would play Nick Massi.
