The opening day of Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY appears to have far exceeded even Disney's estimates. According to Variety, the epic space adventure may reach the milestone $100 million mark at the box office in its debut weekend.
As of late yesterday afternoon, it was estimated that the film had taken in somewhere between $33 million to $40 million and is expected to reach $95 million or higher by weekend's end, a feat which would mark the highest take ever for the month of August. Original estimates had 'Guardians' opening around $70 million.
Should the intergalactic saga reach $100 million, it would be only the second time thus far this year, joining June's opening of Transformers: Age of Extinction. According to the report, the $100 million mark has been crossed a total of 27 times.
Other films competing for the weekend box office take include Universal Pictures' James Brown biopic "Get on Up", bringing in an estimated $5.5 million on Friday and a projected $16 million opening weekend total, and the second weekend of the Scarlett Johannson-led 'Lucy', looking to come in at second place with approximately $19 million.
Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy from director James Gunn, expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.
To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy's fate in the balance.
The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro.
