I AM LEGEND Author Richard Matheson Dies at 87

The man behind I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, and other classics, Richard Matheson, has died at the age of 87.

Matheson's daughter announced the news today on her personal Facebook page, according to io9, writing:

"My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved...he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever...I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there..."

Matheson was best known for writing I AM LEGEND, most recently adapted for the big screen with Will Smith Starring. He also wrote such fiction stories as A STIR OF ECHOES; WHAT DREAMS MAY COME; BUTTON, BUTTON; and more. The prolific author, known for his ability to inject humanity into science fiction, also penned 14 episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Matheson won lifetime achievement honors from the Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Awards, and in 2010, was also inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
