DEXTER Alum David Zayas Signs on for ANNIE Remake
A DEXTER alum has officially boarded the upcoming ANNIE remake.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Zayas has signed on for the film, inspired by the classic Broadway musical with a modern spin, joining Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale. The film is currenly filming on-location in New York City.
Zayas will take on the role of "Lou, the local bodega owner who is a friend to Annie and has a crush on Miss Hannigan."
As previously reported, the film's release date was pushed from Christmas Day 2014 to Dec. 19.
The upcoming remake of ANNIE will be helmed by Will Gluck from a script recently revised by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna. Gluck will also serve as a producer on the film along with James Lassiter, Will Smith andJada Pinkett Smith, Shawn Carter aka Jay Z, Jay Brown and Tyran Smith.
The Broadway musical is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics byMartin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan. The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre). It spawned numerous productions in many countries, as well as national tours, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical's songs "Tomorrow" and "Hard-Knock Life" are among its most popular musical numbers.
Annie, directed by James Lapine, is currently playing on Broadway.

Zayas had been with DEXTER since its premiere in 2006 until it concluded its run this month, and was also featured on HBO's long-running prison drama OZ. His film credits include THE EXPENDABLES, 13, and can next be seen in RIDE. Zayas was also featured in the original Broadway cast of 2003's ANNA IN THE TROPICS.
