FUN HOME, the highly-anticipated, Award-winning American musical opened April 19. With music by four-time Tony Award nominee Jeanine Tesori, a book and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Lisa Kron and direction by Drama Desk nominee Sam Gold, FUN HOME started previews on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on March 27. The Outer Critics Circle, the organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway announced the nominees this morning for the 2014-15 season. The first major Broadway/Off-Broadway award nominees of the New York theater season, the organization is celebrating its 64th season of bestowing awards of excellence in the field of theater. SOMETHING ROTTEN! Leads this year's nominee list with 12 nominations, followed by 9 for ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, 8 for AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and 7 for WOLF HALL. Four time Grammy Award winner Renée Fleming made her Broadway debut alongside Tony Award nominee Douglas Sills, two-time Emmy Award nominee Anna Chlumsky, Jerry O'Connell,Blake Hammond and Scott Robertson in LIVING ON LOVE by two-time Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro, based on the play Peccadillo by Garson Kanin, and directed by three-time Tony Award winnerKathleen Marshall. Based on Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning 20th-century epic Russian masterpiece, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is directed by Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys), with a book by Michael Weller (Ragtime), music by Lucy Simon (The Secret Garden), lyrics by Michael Korie (Grey Gardens) and Amy Powers (Ella Enchanted), and choreography by Kelly Devine (Rocky). The generosity of the American theatre community shined brightly as six weeks of spring fundraising raised another record-breaking grand total for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The 29th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition raised a remarkable $4,711,386, making this the third year in a row the event set a new fundraising record. The grand total was announced Tuesday, April 21 by four of this season's brightest stars: Andy Karl (On the Twentieth Century), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Helen Mirren (The Audience), and Matthew Morrison (Finding Neverland). The completely original, new musical comedy SOMETHING ROTTEN!, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin), with music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Wayne Kirkpatrick and Golden Globe Award nominee Karey Kirkpatrick and a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and best-selling author John O'Farrell opened April 22 at the St. James Theatre. Judith Light (Two-time Drama Desk and Tony Award winner, Other Desert Cities, The Assembled Parties) and Jessie Mueller (Drama Desk, Tony, and Grammy Award winner, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) announced the nominations for the 60th Annual Drama Desk Awards at 54 Below. Manhattan Theatre Club's presentation of Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of AIRLINE HIGHWAY, the new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Lisa D'Amour (Detroit), directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Casa Valentina, Take Me Out), opened April 23 at MTC's Samuel J. THE VISIT, the final musical ever by legendary Tony Award-winning duo John Kander and Fred Ebb, opened April 23 at the Lyceum Theatre.
