The 2013 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Opening Night Gala and Soiree, "Once Upon a Time," has a won a 2015 Gala Award, "Best Fundraising Event," by Special Events magazine. Pittsburgh Symphony Director of Events Shannon Capellupo accepted the award at a black-tie ceremony on January 8 in Anaheim, Calif.

This annual event, which raises funds for the Pittsburgh Symphony's education and community engagement programs, was the only nominee in the category from the United States. "Once Upon a Time" was held in September 2013 and featured cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and was the first Pittsburgh Symphony event to gross more than $1 million.

"This award is an amazing honor for us," said Jodi Weisfeld, vice president of development. "I want to thank Shannon Capellupo, director of events, her talented fundraising team and our chairs and honorary chairs for all their hard work. I also want to thank the Pittsburgh community for its generous support of this event. This honor wouldn't be possible without that support!"

Since 1986, Special Events magazine, the premiere industry publication, has recognized event excellence with its annual Gala Awards. For the 2015 Gala Awards, the magazine received entries in 35 categories from nine countries.
