The Balanescu Quartet to Bring MARIA T. to the Schimmel Center, 12/20

The Balanescu Quartet is led by Romanian virtuoso violinist and composer Alexander Balanescu. With an eye toward pushing the limits of a contemporary string quartet, Balenscu has collaborated with Lounge Lizard John Lurie, Jack de Johnette, Ornette Coleman, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, David Byrne, the Pet Shop Boys, Spiritualized, Kate Bush, Pina Bausch and Kraftwerk.

The performance at The Michael SchimMel Center is inspired by the legendary Romanian singer, Maria Tanase (1913 - 1963). Maria T. expresses the synergy between classical and traditional music, using computer technology to create a geographical and cultural bridge between the Quartet and Maria Tanase. The performance is accompanied by Steve Arguelles on percussion and with the unique digital video and stage design of Klaus Obermaier.
