Robert L. Bailey IV Elementary School will host pianist and friend of the Rhode Island Philharmonic ALON GOLDSTEIN for "Beethoven: The Story Behind the Music" on Thursday, May 8 at 9:30am. In what will be an educational presentation for 300 students in grades 3-5, Mr. Goldstein will perform an entire sonata by Beethoven as well as other short works to craft a musical and historical listening journey. He will also speak on listening to classical music as a method of creating storylines and reflecting upon personal experiences through introspection and active thought.

"Some of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had, both as a musician and as a person, were while playing outside the concert hall and reaching out through community outreach activities," Goldstein states. "Each student made a conscious and successful connection with the music I played. It was miraculous to witness how the music of Bach, Mozart or Beethoven could be understood on infinite number of levels and at any age. My main goal is to give everyone the chance to be transported by the beauty and power of classical music."

More information on the series and Mr. Goldstein's experience can be found on his website and blog.

In a more formal engagement, Mr. Goldstein will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1 alongside the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday May 10, 8pm at The Vets, Providence. Visit riphil.org for more details.
