MusicaNova Orchestra presents Traditional China: A Cultural Celebration in a free, family-friendly community concert on Sunday, April 2nd at 3:00 PM, at Scottsdale Presbyterian Church, 3421 North Hayden Road, Scottsdale, at the corner of Hayden and Osborn Roads.

Admission is free, and donations to support the series will be accepted.

The concert celebrates traditions of Chinese instrumental music played on instruments that date back as much as 8,000 years. Artists are currently residents of the Valley of the Sun, including Lia Ma Gates, playing the Pipa or Chinese Guitar; pianist Zhou Jiang; Zhingan Chen playing the Hulusi or Cucurbit Flute, and Youliang Zhaou, playing the Erhu and Jinghu, both members of the Chinese Violin family.

The program includes traditional Chinese melodies and music from the Beijing Opera, as well as contemporary tunes played on traditional instruments.

All the artists are natives of China and studied music both there and in colleges and graduate schools in the United States. They have credits in performing, arranging, and composing both in the Chinese tradition and "World Music" spanning the continents. All have extensive performing credits in China, the US, and Europe, and frequently appear at festivals and with orchestras in the Phoenix area.

MusicaNova is a professional symphony orchestra founded in 2003 and dedicated to playing new and neglected music and introducing the finest new artists to the Valley of the Sun. MusicaNova is supported in part by grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. Call 480-585-4485, or visit www.musicanovaaz.com.
