Dr. Daniel Goldmark, Director of the Center for Popular Music Studies at Case Western Reserve will be the speaker at the Canton Symphony Orchestra's next ConverZations program. ConverZations, sponsored by T. K. and Faye A. Heston, are free public discussions featuring a variety of musicians and music-lovers alike. Goldmark will present "Music and Film" on Monday January 11 at noon at the Zimmermann Symphony Center, 2331 17th Street NW in Canton. The ConverZations Series will continue on the second Monday of every month through April 2016.
Dr. Goldmark works on American popular music, film and cartoon music, and the history of the music industry. He received his B.A. in music from the University of California, Riverside. Goldmark received both a M.A. and Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a dissertation titled Happy Harmonies: Music and the Hollywood Animated Cartoon. Goldmark co-edited The Cartoon Music Book (A Cappella, 2001), Beyond the Soundtrack: Representing Music in Cinema (California, 2007), Funny Pictures: Animation and Comedy in Studio-Era Hollywood (California, 2011), and Jazz/Not Jazz: The Music and Its Boundaries (California, 2012). During the ConverZations program, Goldmark will introduce attendees to how film music is written and recorded to make audiences laugh, cry, and scream at the right times when they watch movies. ConverZations attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch, and the orchestra provides coffee and light desserts.
