Canton Symphony Orchestra Offers Four Music Summer Camps

CANTON, OHIO (May 5, 2015) - Canton Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is pleased to offer four summer music camps. The first three camps are for aspiring student musicians, and the fourth is a special opportunity open to all individuals and families in the Greater Canton area. These week-long camps will be run by Rachel Waddell, Assistant Conductor of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the CSO Education Staff and will feature sectionals with CSO musicians. The third week is run in partnership with Malone University.

Week 1, Beginning String Camp, will run June 8 through 12 from 9:00am - 3:00pmat Fieldcrest Estate of North Canton (1346 Easthill Street, North Canton) and is intended for beginning students of violin, viola, cello and string bass. It is recommended for students entering grades 4-6 in the fall of 2015 and designed for those who have been playing their instrument for 6 months through Suzuki Book 3. The week will focus on building string technique, performing beginning string orchestral repertoire, music theory, music history as well as music and movement. Cost is $275 for the week or $250 if registered before May 15.

The second week, Intermediate String Camp, is June 15 through 19 from 9:00am-3:00pm at Fieldcrest Estate of North Canton and is intended for intermediate and advanced students of violin, viola, cello, and sting bass. It is recommended for students entering grades 6-12 in the fall of 2015 and designed for students in Suzuki Book 4 and higher. The week will focus on building string technique, performing intermediate orchestral repertoire, music history and theory fundamentals. Cost is $325 for the week or $300 if registered before May 15.

Week 3, a Chamber Music Camp organized in collaboration with Malone University, is June 22 through 26 at Malone University (2600 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton) and is intended for all instrumentalists entering grades 7-12. Malone University faculty will coach pianists, woodwind, brass, string and percussion players in the art of listening and communicating like professional musicians in a chamber ensemble setting. Rachel Waddell will also teach classes throughout the week. An audition is required. Cost is $400 for the week and includes meals, lodging, supplies, T-shirt and admission/transportation to activities. Registration and details are available at www.malone.edu/summercamps.

The final week, Civic Orchestra Immersion, is June 29 through July 2 from 6:00pm - 8:30pm at the Zimmermann Symphony Center (2331 17th Street NW, Canton) and is intended for high school, college and adult instrumentalists. This orchestra gives aspiring and amateur musicians a chance to experience orchestral performance by reading and rehearsing standard classical and popular repertoire. Those that participate in the intensive will be eligible for a possible side-by-side performance with the CSO on a concert later in the summer. Cost is $75 for the week or $100 per family.

A limited number of funds is available for scholarship assistance for youth who demonstrate financial need. Participants who are interested in need-based scholarship should complete an application.

Founded in 1937, the Canton Symphony Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble and organization dedicated to performing concerts that enrich, educate and entertain.
