Atlantic City High School music teacher Steven Spurlock is helping to launch a districtwide effort to implement a string instrument program with help from the Bay-Atlantic Symphony.

Viola player, Dolores Dillon is offering small group and private string lessons to the students, which about half of the 19 participating students are just starting a string instrument.

According to an article, one student who began playing in the 4th grade said she "got her violin through the Friends of Music program started by former state Sen. William Gormley and his wife, Ginny, which raises money to buy instruments for the district. If they stick with it, students get to keep the instrument."

The mentorship program is supported by Friends of Music and the Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation. They provided $15,000 to cover costs.

The orchestra is currently seeking donations of instruments for students.
