Thérèse Martin was like so many other teenage girls, until she felt a deeper calling push her towards a life of spiritual sanctity. She lived a relatively spoiled life in nineteenth century France until Thérèse, despite heavy opposition, became a nun at age 15 and dedicated herself to the simplicity of service. After passing away at the age of 24, she was canonized, almost by popular demand, and is now regarded as the greatest saint of modern times.

John Wright was unaware of all of this when he picked up Thérèse's autobiography, "Story of a Soul," a few years ago. However, he found himself inspired by her writings. After further study of her life, he decided to bring her story to a modern audience. His new book, "The Smallest Spark," is the result - a creative retelling of the life of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

"Thérèse has made an impact on many unsuspecting people, including myself," Wright said. "Her story, though now over a century old, speaks to my life, as it has so many others."

Thérèse became known for her "little way" of living life. She consistently made use of the simplest acts of love throughout her service to others - a smile, a gentle response, an extra dose of patience. She persevered in these practices even when she experienced tremendous suffering from a terminal illness that took its toll for more than a year before she finally passed.

"Thérèse was not a flowery, childish individual, despite her young age," Wright said. "She was a self-emptying woman of spiritual steel. Her life is worth getting to know regardless of one's background."
