Registered Nurse Writes New Memoir, 'Metal Butterfly'

Nurses are supposed to be the caregivers, but what happens when the tables are turned? Surgical nurse Jennifer De Sousa has come within inches of death on multiple occasions but has found a saving grace.

"Just one smile can cure so much," De Sousa said. "Sure, some days were much better than others. However, during bouts with both my illness and self-esteem, the best solution was always staying positive."

"Metal Butterfly" was written to uplift those struggling with personal or medical issues. It's a story that reiterates that anything is possible with the proper guidance and attitude.

"I had a great upbringing and could have been anything I wanted," De Sousa said. "It was my life goal to become a nurse so that I could give back what others have given me."

De Sousa believes that her memoir is especially powerful for those who have a deep- rooted faith in God. She explains that in both her career and her medical horrors, she has witnessed many miracles that have no scientific explanation.

"Happiness and faith are the keys to a better life," De Sousa said. "The miracles in the book give people the hope and courage needed to fight their own battles."

Jennifer De Sousa was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with a Hemangioma. At seventeen she developed Systemic Lupus. However, her uplifting personality has allowed her to pursue her goals and give back to others. She is a lector at her parish and enjoys telling her story to teens at their confirmation retreats. De Sousa is currently a Cardiac Surgical Registered Nurse in Fall River, Massachusetts and is pursuing a higher nursing degree.
