Red Tide consistes of four parts, two of which are written by Larry Niven and the other two by Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington. It is loosely based on Niven's 1973 story "Flash Crowd," which explores the concept of instantaneous travel across large distances, and the impact of such a technological innovation on society.

This is a theme that has fascinated the author throughout his career and even appears in his seminal work Ringworld, where the central character celebrates his birthday by instantly teleporting himself to different time zones, extending his "birthday." The author also discusses the impact of such instantaneous transportation in his essay, "Exercise in Speculation: The Theory and Practice of Teleportation."

The book is available for wholesale to stores at a hefty 60% discount off the list price (US only, on a non-returnable basis) directly from the publisher, and will be released for general sale to the public on October 15, 2014.
