Praise for "The Summer of Shadow" from US Review of Books:

"Colored photographs of Shadow, the people who raised him, and Murphy, the family dog, are scattered throughout the book, making it a visual treat for the reader. This is a great read for the lovers of crows and ravens, wildlife rehabilitators, and anyone with the interest in learning more about birds in general."

"I want readers to see that wild creatures, such as this crow, employ a thought process and have feelings, as well as needs," says Payne, "and given the chance, will make the magic that happens when humans and animals get to know each other well."

"The Summer of Shadow" has been awarded the Gold Seal of Literary Excellence and has also had highly rated reviews written about it by the Midwest book review and the Westerfield review, as well as multiple highly rated reader reviews.
