Spanning two world wars, the new book "The Red Rose of Romance and War" (published by Balboa Press AU) by author John A. Yates features a young Australian soldier learning about the world, the horrors of combat and the miracle of love.

This new historical fiction follows Wilf Yates, a young man who joins the Australian army to make a difference. But he soon learns that nothing can prepare him for his place in history or for the romance he will develop with a nurse named Ann Davis.

As a member of the Australian Imperial Forces, Wilf takes part in the capture of Mont St. Quentin in France during World War I. His heroic tour of duty is brought to a screeching halt when he develops a case of trench foot and is sent to a London hospital for treatment. There he meets Ann, who heals more than his body; she heals his heart.

"There are many Australians who have connections with soldiers who enlisted to serve in WWI, who know very little of what those soldiers did for Australia and how they suffered both physically and emotionally," Yates says. "This story enables readers to understand the horrors of trench life while still experiencing the romance and excitement that many soldiers were part of in those times."

Yates hopes the love story within "The Red Rose of Romance and War," inspired by the wartime diaries of Yates' father, will transport readers to the terrifying and heady times of WWI and World War II and give them a clearer perspective of what wartime life was really like.
