NEW YORK

In her thought-provoking new book, "The Ministry of Women at the Altar: Pressure between Spirit & Flesh" (published by WestBow Press), author and scholar Nederland M. Fulgencio provides an alternative view of the meaning behind an altar call and discusses how believers can unlock the secrets to their happiness at the altar.

An altar call is a practice especially common in Christian evangelical churches. During an altar call, those wishing to make a spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ are invited to come forward publicly, by walking down to the altar to discover the good news.

Fulgencio's story takes place in the Garden of Eden, right in the midst of the wedding celebration between Adam, Eve and God. Using these familiar biblical characters, with a focus on the matriarchs Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel, Fulgencio shows how self-disclosure at the altar "can increase the understanding of God's promise of love so that we can survive our journey here on Earth."

"I want readers to have an awakening that the soul is won only when the spirit is saved," Fulgencio says, "which is what happens when we allow Jesus into our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit."
