The Second World War was a catastrophic event that left the man's greatest cities reduced to rubble, and countless lives extinguished. Yet amidst this bleak backdrop, tales of human perseverance and success continue to play out, for it is in the darkest of times that man's enduring spirit reveals itself, when his capacity for greatness is most needed. Veteran author George R. Lipponer shares a coming of age tale, inspired by real-life events, of a boy who tries to live a good life in this harsh era, while struggling against challenges, both physical and moral in nature in his quest to find the titular Rung to Success.

The tale follows a boy named Dan and the adversities he faces in his path to adulthood. His story spans from the Great Depression to World War 2, and his subsequent return to civilian life. It takes place in Long Island, New York, where the young lad is left alone with his mother and sister because his father is a prisoner of the Japanese. During his youth, a nearby farm and the wisdom of the farmer inspires him, and instills in him the lessons of life from early on. Young Dan is exposed to greed and personal gain, and after being accused of a crime, he makes a decision that will change his life forever.

Rung to Success explores what happens when an innocent youth is exposed to the harsh realities of life and endeavors to overcome them while maintaining his principles. Readers will see Dan as he suffers war-time experiences, which spur him to seek a better way of life, using the words of wisdom from the farmer who was his mentor. After he leaves the military and finishes rehabilitation, his life begins anew as he goes on a search of success that will be full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns.

Ultimately, Lipponer portrays, through the life and times of Dan, the juxtaposition of the innocence of youth and the wisdom brought by age. These traits are quintessentially human and humane, yet paradoxical and contradictory, and are essential attributes of his protagonist, who grows through the years yet maintains the unyielding perseverance needed to overcome hardship. Rung to Success is a touching portrayal of the human condition set in one of the most pivotal periods of American history, a story that will engage and emotionally resonate with readers everywhere.
