Emiko Lyovin chronicles the real-life adventures of a woman who lived in pre-revolutionary Russia and war-torn Europe before making her way to Hawaii in her 2012 biography, "Valentina: An Odyssey from Pre-Revolutionary Russia Through War-Torn Europe to a Pacific Paradise" (published by Trafford Publishing), which is getting a new marketing push.

"Valentina" tells the life story of Lyovin's Russian mother-in-law, Valentina, raised in the Russian imperial capital of Saint Petersburg. As a daughter of a Russian Orthodox priest, Valentina experienced danger during the Russian revolution and civil war. She left Russia to live in Yugoslavia. 30 years later, she fled Yugoslavia for Canada and subsequently lived on the Pacific island of Hawaii for 10 years.

An excerpt from "Valentina":

"In the year 1910, Valentina was eight years old. This was also the year that Russia was ravaged by a terrible cholera epidemic. One night during the horrible epidemic, little Valentina was awakened by a commotion in her grandmother's room. Her sister Sania, with whom she shared a room, remained sound asleep, but Valentina, fully awakened, rose from her bed and crept carefully to the door. She peered out. Standing there in her bare feet on the cold night floor, Valentina was transfixed by what she saw: unfamiliar faces running frantically to and fro in the hallway. It was winter, and though a fire burned in the fireplace, Valentina's body shook with a chill and with a fright."
