Based on the author's professional and personal experiences, Dr. Richard Ng shares to patients suffering from chronic pain the essential book "A Pain Doctor's Dilemma: Prescribing Opioids in an Era of Overdose" (published by LifeRich Publishing), which tackles comprehensively and thoroughly the issues and concerns of people suffering from pain, as well as suggested medications.

Ng believes that the use of opioids for pain management is necessary and effective to ease chronic pain. He also stresses that patients must be responsible in receiving such prescription, and that the government may intervene through enactment prudent policies to avoid scapegoating conscientious, compassionate and well-intentioned physicians.

"Even if all pain doctors were forbidden to prescribe opioids for pain, the drug problems of our society will not go away. In fact, the so-called opioid crisis will get worse, as what is happening nowadays," the author says. "Doctors treating patients suffering from chronic pain should not be subject to witch hunting because they are well-intentioned and compassionate except for a very few physicians who are unscrupulous and careless."

An excerpt from the book:
Chronic pain: it can be mild, moderate, severe or intractable, and it may last for a long time - for six months of more up to many years including a lifetime. The persistence of chronic pain can be very debilitating, and in severe cases, can lead to other issues such as feelings of depression, social withdrawal, physical and emotional exhaustion as well as the loss of mobility and/or independence. The worst case scenario is suicide, which is not uncommon among patients suffering from chronic pain.
