WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Feb. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ Queen Njinga of Angola is one of the most powerful and brave figures in African history. Her story is often overlooked in history books, but she was one of the most multifaceted world leaders. The 2019 Commemoration is honored to host Dr. Linda M. Heywood, history professor at Boston University, for her book signing at the Jamestown Settlement. Dr. Heywood will discuss the book with attendees, explore the global vision that informed Njinga's leadership and make connections to issues relevant to the status of women in today's world.

The arrival of Africans in English North America is an important part of the 2019 Commemoration's themes of diversity, democracy and entrepreneurialism. Many of the early Africans that arrived in the English North America were from the region now known as Angola and their impact on the colony and America's history cannot be understated. Jamestown is where African culture first became American culture. Over the next three years, the 2019 Commemoration will highlight the way Africans shaped early America and the important role they played in the evolution of the American experience.
