Book Fair to Feature New Autobiography, SHADOWS AND ECHOES

Upcoming National Book Exhibit will showcase a book that reveals a beautiful father-and-son relationship. "It is a wise child that knows his own father," Homer once wrote. Having aged in wisdom as in years, Stan Silverman reflects upon life and publishes his debut book inspired by his own father. With his father's death, Silverman lost what was his major support system and best friend. That resulting void began a period of self-reflection and writing of "Shadows and Echoes."

The book, set in Baltimore, MD, Silverman's home for most of his life, is an autobiographical work, a retrospective on childhood, family, religion, peer relationships, and career aspirations among other life areas. Silverman's "look-back" is freeing and stabilizing, while answering, to a great extent, the over-arching question: "Why I am what I am?" Hence, it offers readers the benefits and potential of retrospection and reconnection.

It is also very relatable for readers of Silverman's age and of the same or even different ethnicity or religious backgrounds (many Jewish precepts are included). It obviates the need for and significance of self-reflection. Moreover, it is relevant in today's society if the difficulties and ills of adolescence and family erosion are considered.

With its fictionalized setting, "Shadows and Echoes" allowed Silverman to take on two roles - that of protagonist and psychiatrist - which expanded the content's scope and depth. This, in turn, gives readers insight as to the psychotherapeutic arena and process along with the attributes of this interaction. Clearly, this work, while epitomizing Homer's words, is something that would have made Silverman's father very proud.

This book will be featured at the 2013 American Association of School Librarians in Hartford, CT, on November 13 - 17, 2013.

About the Author
Stan Silverman holds a Ph.D. in Human Development - College of Education from the University of Maryland (1994), where he completed his dissertation on "An Exploratory Study of the Effects of Humor on Depression and Hopelessness of Incarcerated Males." He earned an M.S. degree in Health Science Administration from Towson University (1981). He is a retired psychotherapist who was born and raised and lives in Baltimore, Md.

As a psychotherapist, he worked with adolescents, baby boomers, and the geriatric populations, experiences which influenced his acceptance of causality over the life span. The older population, with its sensitive and emotional retrospection, offered a particular perspective tinged with forks-in-the-road, losses, changes, and regrets; factors that buttressed his own views and gave an impetus to much of his writing.

Silverman is currently working on his second book, "Mazel," which explores how luck influences people's lives in a variety of contexts. He has two daughters and a granddaughter.
