An American Civil War Soldier Chronicled in New Book

CAMP HILL, Pa. - "The Civil War Memoir of Sgt. Christian Lenker, 19th Ohio Volunteers" (published by Xlibris), was originally published as a series of 174 articles appearing from 1912 to 1915 in the Pottsville (PA) Evening Chronicle. Nearly a century later, author Michael Barton, together with Sgt. Lenker's direct descendant, Judith A. Kennedy, published a transcribed and edited version of the memoir to once again highlight the contributions of the brave sergeant.

Receiving help from his students, as well as Judith Kennedy, Prof. Barton spearheaded the transcription and editing of the memoir from the only surviving newspaper articles. In this narrative, Sgt. Lenker himself tells in great detail his regiment's fighting at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, and Nashville. Annotations and written introductory essays were provided by the editing team.

About the Author
Prof. Michael Barton received his doctorate in American Civilization at the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 and has been a faculty member in the American Studies program at the Pennsylvania State at Harrisburg for over four decades. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's planning group for the commemoration of the Civil War, and is helping Dauphin County organize the 150th anniversary of its role in the Civil War.

Judith Kennedy, MA, MS, is a counselor at Samaritan Counseling Center in Lancaster, Pa. She studied psychology at Millersville University, and religion and depth psychology at Syracuse University. She has taught English literature, philosophy and religion at other schools. Her poetry and essays appear in The Atlanta Review, Mythopoetry Scholar, Poem, Friends Journal and other publications.
