The 2026 Tony nominees are already winners... literally. For some, this marks their first nomination, but others have already won Tony Awards in seasons past. We took a look at which nominees have won at least a Tony or two (or four!) - amongst them, they've gathered a total 64 awards.

The acting in this production of Assassins is phenomenal, giving the audience the unsettling experience of relating to these characters as they plot and execute their assassination attempts. Assassins is a musical that will speak to many today.

Out of the Box Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” opens at Center Stage this Friday night. Expect a rogue’s gallery of America’s presidential assassins (and try-hard assassins) who feel no remorse whatsoever for their crimes. And, in a way that only Stephen Sondheim’s musicals can finesse, it’s a comedy. It also shows the continuity and change of political violence in America. 

I admit I’ve never seen Stephen Sondhiem’s Assassins, nor ever heard the score or read the synopsis. A flop in 1990, the 2004 revival won five Tony awards, and it’s been in theatre rotations since, often causing controversy for its raw language and unsavory content. Stephen Sondheim’s fabulous music is presented in a different ‘light’ as songs from across four decades of the maestro’s work come together for PUTTING IT TOGETHER.

The collection documents songs that made it into Sondheim’s musicals, and it also documents cut or unused songs that were edited out of shows before they opened. Rarest of all, it documents songs that were never finished. These are not the rarities that made it into Marry Me a Little or a Sondheim compilation album. Rather, they are sketches of songs that provide a window into Sondheim’s process while creating a score and show him developing characters and determining the details of what are now iconic musicals.

Paul Mescal is making it known: he is a huge fan of Stephen Sondheim. In a new interview, the Olivier Award-winning actor shared his appreciation for the late composer, who is known for such musicals as Company, Sweeney Todd, and Merrily We Roll Along.

When all is said and done, you have to applaud the bravery of this show. In an October where everyone else is offering safe fare such as British comedies, yet another take on Dracula, and an additional adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, this small company is daring you to face what might be wrong with America. It is a huge swing for the fences and remarkably well-performed and produced.

The Garden Theatre, one of Houston's newest theatre companies, has announced plans to bring the semi-historical musical, Assassins, to life at MATCH. Featuring the stories of America's real-life villains, the production will run October 11-27, 2024 at Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston.

A new production of Into the Woods, the classic Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, is now playing at the Greenway Court Theatre.
