Citi Performing Arts Center Education Program to Receive 2016 Ann Flagg Multicultural Award from AATE

By:

Citi Performing Arts Center announced today that its City Spotlights Leadership Program will receive the American Alliance for Theatre & Education's (AATE) 2016 Ann Flagg Multicultural Award. The prestigious award honors an individual, organization or company who has made significant contributions to the field of theatre for youth or arts education dealing with multicultural issues and reaching diverse audiences and constituencies. This year's award will be presented to Citi Performing Arts Center during AATE's 2016 Conference in Boston on July 28.

City Spotlights is a youth employment program that empowers Boston teens to become leaders in school, at home, and in their communities by using their creative voices. Through its core components of leadership training, community advocacy, and job readiness, City Spotlights teaches teens 21st Century job skills through hands-on arts training. In 2015, the program doubled in size and provided 61 Teen Leaders from 36 different schools and 9 Boston neighborhoods with a paid, seven-week summer job in the arts. It also reached more than 45,000 people through community workshops and performances. This summer's program will kick off in early July.

"We are extremely proud of the impact our City Spotlights program has had in helping our teens develop confidence, strengthen collaboration, build leadership skills, and become engaged citizens," said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., President & CEO of Citi Performing Arts Center. "We are grateful to the American Alliance for Theatre & Education for this recognition!"

AATE works to ensure that every young person experiences quality theatre arts in their lives provided by proficient, talented artists and educators. The Ann Flagg Multicultural Award is named in honor of Ann Flagg, who worked as an elementary drama teacher in the Evanston, Illinois School District 65 and as a director and playwright at Karamu House in Cleveland, Ohio.

"City Spotlights feels like a family," said Teen Leader and City Spotlights participant Jalijah of Dorchester. "It's not just a job, it's something that inspires you to move forward. My experience with Citi Performing Arts Center gave me more confidence by encouraging me to engage with others and use my creativity."
